PRECAUTIONS
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING
Especially in the case of children, a guardian should provide guidance on
how to properly use and handle the product before actual use.
Please keep this manual in a safe and handy place for future reference.
WARNING
Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of serious injury
or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire or other hazards. These
precautions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Power supply
• Do not place the power cord near heat sources such as
heaters or radiators. Also, do not excessively bend or
otherwise damage the cord, or place heavy objects on it.
• Do not touch the product or the power plug during an
electrical storm.
• Use only the correct voltage specified for the product.
The required voltage is printed on the name plate of the
product.
• Use only the supplied or the specified AC adaptor (page
22). Do not use the AC adaptor for other devices.
• Check the power plug periodically and remove any dirt or
dust which may have accumulated on it.
• Insert the power plug firmly all the way into the AC outlet.
Using the product when it is not plugged in sufficiently can
cause dust to accumulate on the plug, possibly resulting in
fire or skin burns.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the AC
outlet you are using is easily accessible. If some trouble or
malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch
and disconnect the plug from the outlet. Even when the
power switch is turned off, as long as the power cord is not
unplugged from the wall AC outlet, the product will not be
disconnected from the power source.
• Do not connect the product to an electrical outlet using a
multi-plug outlet extender. Doing so can result in lower
sound quality, or possibly cause overheating in the outlet.
• When disconnecting the power plug, always hold the plug
itself and not the cord. Pulling by the cord can damage it
and cause electric shocks or a fire.
• If not using the product for long periods of time, be sure to
pull the power plug from the AC outlet.
Do not disassemble
• This product contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not
attempt to disassemble the internal parts or modify them
in any way.
Water warning
• Do not expose the product to rain, use it near water or in
damp or wet conditions, or place on it any containers (such
as vases, bottles or glasses) containing liquids which might
spill into any openings or places where water may drop. A
liquid such as water getting into the product may cause a
fire, electric shocks, or malfunctions.
• Use the AC adaptor indoors only. Do not use in any wet
environments.
• Never insert or remove a power plug with wet hands.
Fire warning
• Do not place any burning items or open flames near the
product, since they may cause a fire.
Batteries
• Do not dispose of a battery in a fire.
• Do not expose the battery to conditions of extreme low air
pressure, cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight or a fire) or
excessive dust or humidity.
Doing so may result in the battery bursting, causing a fire
or injury.
• Follow the precautions below. Failure to do so might result
in battery fluid leakage. If the contents of the battery gets
on your hands or in your eyes, it can cause blindness,
chemical burns, and damage of the product.
–Use the specified battery type (page 22) only.
–Do not use new batteries together with old ones.
–Do not mix battery types.
–Always make sure all batteries are inserted in conformity
with the +/– polarity markings.
–Do not disassemble a battery.
–When the batteries run out, or if the product is not to
be used for a long time, remove the batteries from the
product.
–Do not attempt to recharge batteries that are not
designed to be charged.

• If the batteries do leak, avoid contact with the leaked fluid.
If the battery fluid should come in contact with your eyes,
mouth, or skin, wash immediately with water and consult
a doctor. Battery fluid is corrosive and may possibly cause
loss of sight or chemical burns.
• When using rechargeable batteries, follow the instructions
that came with the batteries. Use only the specified charger
device and within the specified charging temperature range
when charging.
Charging with an unspecified charger or at a temperature
outside the range may cause leakage, overheating,
explosion, or malfunction.
• Keep batteries away from children. A child could
accidentally swallow a battery. Failure to observe this may
also cause inflammation due to battery fluid leaks.
• Do not subject batteries to mechanical shock.
Doing so may cause damage caused by batteries, electric
shock, or malfunction.
• Do not intentionally short the battery. Explosion or liquid
leakage may cause fire or injury.
• Do not put batteries in a pocket or bag, or carry or store
them together with pieces of metal. Batteries kept in such
condition could short, burst, or leak, causing a fire or injury.
If you notice any abnormality
• If any of the following problems occur, immediately turn off
the power switch and disconnect the power plug from the
outlet. If you are using batteries, remove all batteries from
the product. Finally have the device inspected by Yamaha
service personnel.
–The power cord or plug becomes frayed or damaged.
–Unusual smells or smoke are emitted.
–Some object, or water has been dropped into the product.
–There is a sudden loss of sound during use of the product.
–Cracks or other visible damage appear on the product.
CAUTION
Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to
you or others, or damage to the product or other property. These precautions include, but
are not limited to, the following:
Location
• Do not place the product in an unstable position or
a location with excessive vibration, where it might
accidentally fall over and cause injury.
• Before moving the product, remove all connected cables,
to prevent damage to the cables or injury to anyone who
might trip over them.
• Use only the stand specified for the product. When
attaching it, use the provided screws only. Failure to do so
could cause damage to the internal components or result in
the product falling over.
Connections
• Before connecting the product to other devices, turn off the
power for all devices. Before turning the power on or off for
all devices, set all volume levels to minimum.
• Be sure to set the volumes of all devices at their minimum
levels and gradually raise the volume controls while playing
the product to set the desired listening level.
Handling
• Do not insert foreign materials such as metal or paper into
any openings or gaps of the product. Failure to observe this
may cause a fire, electric shocks, or malfunctions.
• Do not rest your weight on, or place heavy objects on the
product, and do not use excessive force on the buttons,
switches or connectors.
• Do not use the product or headphones for a long period
of time at a high or uncomfortable volume level, since this
can cause permanent hearing loss. If you experience any
hearing loss or ringing in the ears, consult a physician.
• Remove the power plug from the AC outlet before cleaning
the unit. Failure to observe this may cause electric shocks.

Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modifications to the product, or data that is lost or
destroyed.
Always turn the power off when the product is not in use.
Even when the [ ] (Standby/On) switch is in standby status (display is off), electricity is still flowing to the product at the minimum
level.
When you are not using the product for a long time, make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet.
NOTICE
To avoid the possibility of malfunction/
damage to the product, damage to data,
or damage to other property, follow the

■Handling
• Do not use this product in the vicinity of a TV, radio, stereo
equipment, mobile phone, or other electric devices.
Otherwise, this product or the other device may generate
noise.
• When you use the product along with an app on your smart
device, such as a smartphone or tablet, we recommend that
you enable “Airplane Mode” on the device to avoid noise
caused by communication.
• Depending on the condition of surrounding radio waves,
the product may possibly malfunction.
• Do not expose the product to excessive dust or vibrations,
or extreme cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight, near a
heater, or in a car during the day) to prevent the possibility
of disfiguration, damage to the internal components or
unstable operation. (Verified operating temperature range:
5° – 40°C, or 41° – 104°F.)
• Do not place vinyl, plastic or rubber objects on the product,
since this might discolor the product.
• Do not press the LCD screen with your finger because it
is a sensitive, precision-made part. Doing so might cause
an appearance abnormality, such as a stripe on the LCD,
although this abnormality should disappear again within a
short time.
■Maintenance
• When cleaning the product, use a soft and dry (or slightly
damp) cloth. Do not use paint thinners, solvents, alcohol,
cleaning fluids, or chemical-impregnated wiping cloths.
■Saving data
• Some of the data of this product (page 20) are retained
when the power is turned off. However, the saved data may
be lost due to some failure, an operational mistake, etc.

Setting Up
Power Requirements
Although the instrument will run either from an AC
adaptor or batteries, Yamaha recommends the use
of an AC adaptor whenever possible.
Using an AC Adaptor
Connect the AC adaptor in the order shown in the
illustration.

WARNING
• Use only the supplied or the specified AC adaptor
(page22).
• When using an AC adaptor with a removable plug,
make sure to keep the plug attached to the AC
adaptor during use and storage. Inserting just the
plug into an outlet can cause electric shock or fire.
• Never touch the inner metallic section of the plug to
avoid electric shock, short circuit, or damage. If the
plug comes off, push it in until it securely clicks in
place. Also be careful that there is no dust or other
foreign matter between the AC adaptor and plug.

CAUTION
• When setting up the instrument, make sure that the
AC outlet you are using is easily accessible. If trouble
or a malfunction occurs, immediately turn the power
off and disconnect the plug from the outlet.
NOTE
• When disconnecting the AC adaptor, turn off the power
of the instrument and follow the order shown above in
reverse.
Using Batteries
This instrument can use AA size alkaline,
manganese dry cell, or rechargeable nickel
metal hydride batteries (rechargeable batteries).
However, the use of alkaline or rechargeable
batteries is recommended, as the instrument may
consume large amounts of power depending on
use.
WARNING
• When the batteries run out, or if the instrument is not
to be used for a long time, remove the batteries from
the instrument.
1 Make sure that the power of the instrument is
off.
2 Open the battery compartment cover located
on the instrument’s bottom panel.
3 Insert the six new batteries, being careful to
follow the polarity markings on the inside of
the compartment.
4 Replace the compartment cover, making sure
that it locks firmly in place.
Make sure to set the battery type correctly
(page 11).

Setting Up
NOTICE
• Connecting or disconnecting the power adaptor with
batteries inserted may turn the power off, resulting in
loss of data being recorded at the time.
• When battery power becomes too low for proper
operation, the volume may be reduced, the sound may
be distorted, and other problems may occur. When
this happens, make sure to replace all batteries with
new ones or already recharged ones.
NOTE
• This instrument cannot charge the batteries. Use only the
specified charger device when charging.
• Even if batteries are inserted into the instrument, the AC
adaptor will be used as the power source when the AC
adaptor is connected.
Setting the battery type
Change the setting on the instrument (dry cell or
rechargeable batteries) according to the battery
type to be used. Dry cell batteries are set by
default. After turning the power on, set the battery
type via Function number 029 (page 21).
For details on how to check and change settings,
see page 20.

NOTICE
• Failure to set the battery type may shorten the
amount of the battery life. Make sure to set the
battery type correctly.
Turning the Power On/Off
1 Turn down the [MASTER VOLUME] dial to
“MIN”.
2 Press the [ ] (Standby/On) switch to turn the
power on.
The Voice name will appear on the display.
Adjust the volume as desired while playing the
keyboard.
3 Press and hold the [ ] (Standby/On) switch for
about a second to turn the power off.
CAUTION
• Even when the power is turned off, electricity is still
flowing to the instrument in a small amount. Remove
the electric plug from the outlet when the instrument
is not to be used for extended periods of time or
during electrical storms.
NOTICE
• Press only the [ ] (Standby/On) switch when turning
the power on. Any other operations such as pressing
keyboards/buttons or stepping on the footswitch may
cause the instrument to malfunction.
Auto Power Off function
To prevent unnecessary power consumption, this
instrument features an Auto Power Off function
that automatically turns the power off if the
instrument is not operated for approximately 30
minutes by default; however, you can change this
setting (Function Number 028; page 21).
Easy deactivation of the Auto Power Off
function
Turn the power on while holding down the lowest
key on the keyboard. The message “oFF AutoOff”
will appear briefly, and then the instrument will
start up with the Auto Power Off function disabled.
Using the Music Rest
Insert the music rest into the slots as shown.

About the alternate button names enclosed in the frame (SHIFT function)
If you operate one of the buttons while holding down !9, the function indicated in the frame below the
button will be executed. For example, holding down !9 and pressing [METRONOME] r calls up the Time
Signature setting display.

metronome. While setting the tempo, the
icon is shown on the display, and you
can enter the tempo using the buttons in group

When “Tempo” appears on the display, use the
Number buttons !4 or [+]/[-] !5 to adjust the
tempo value. Press [+] and [-] !5 simultaneously
to reset the tempo to the default value.
Tap Start
You can start playback of the Song or Style by
tapping this button at the required tempo: four
times for time signatures in 4, and three times
for time signatures in 3.

Selecting a Voice
1 Press [VOICE] !3.
2 Press the button of the desired

3 Play the keyboard.
Calling up the Grand Piano Voice
1 Press [PORTABLE GRAND] !8.
This instantly resets all of your settings,
and lets you play the piano sound with the
entire keyboard.
Playing Various Sound Effects
1 Press [SFX KIT] !7.
2 Play the keyboard.
A sound effect plays, one that corresponds
to the illustration @0 just above the key you
played.
Even if you play a key that does not have an
illustration above it, various sounds will be
produced.

Playing the Keyboard with Two People
(Duo Mode)
1 Press [FUNCTION] !6 repeatedly to
call up “DuoMode (024)”.

Practicing your Favorite Songs (3-Step
Lesson)
1 Select your favorite Song.
(Perform Step 1-2 of “Listening to the
Preset Songs.”)
2 Press [3-STEP LESSON] i the
number of times corresponding to
the lesson type (mode) that you
want to select.
• Once: A sample lesson will be played.
(Listening mode)
LISTEN
• Twice: Practice the timing to play the
keyboard. If the timing is right, the sound
shown on the display will be produced no
matter which key you play. (Timing mode)
TIMING
• 3 times: Practice playing the notes shown
on the display. Song playback will pause
until you press the correct key. (Waiting
mode)
WAITING
The selected lesson type is shown on the
display.
After the count sound, the intro will be
played, and the selected lesson will start.
If you play to the end of the song, your
score will be shown.
3 Press [START/STOP] !1 to exit the
lesson mode.
You can exit the lesson anytime, even while
it’s in progress.
Playing Along with Auto
accompaniment (Styles)
1 Press [STYLE] !3.
2 Press one of the Category buttons !4
to select the desired Style.

Each time you press the button, it changes
to another Style within the same category.
3 Press [ACMP ON/OFF] !2 to turn
Auto Accompaniment on.
The left-hand range functions as the range

6 When you play the root note of the
first chord of the accompaniment
with one finger in the left-hand
range, the accompaniment will
start from the Intro.
7 Play the root note of the
accompaniment chords with your
left hand, and play the melody with
your right hand.
8 Press [INTRO/ENDING/rit.] !2.
After the Ending is played, the Auto
Accompaniment ends.
By pressing [INTRO/ENDING/rit.] !2 again
while the Ending is playing back, you
can finish with a slower playback speed
(ritardando).
Try Guessing the Sound! (Sound Quiz)
1 When you press [SOUND QUIZ] o,
fanfare music sounds, and the quiz
will start.
2 Find and play the same sound as
the sound produced by the
instrument.
If you get it right, move on to the next
question.
You have 3 chances to answer. Do your best
to guess the sound.
After answering all 10 questions, the quiz
will end and your score will be shown.
If you want to exit the quiz at any time,
press [SOUND QUIZ] o again.
Try the Memory Quiz!
Pass the quiz and master playing the melody!
1 When you press [MEMORY QUIZ] !0,
fanfare music sounds, and the quiz
will start.
2 After the example finishes playing,
play the notes.
The number of notes played for the
question increases with each correct
answer.
When you finish the quiz to the end, the
melody will be completed.
When you finish playing the melody to the
end, or when you make a mistake three
times on one question, the quiz ends and
your score is shown.
If you want to exit the quiz at any time,
press [MEMORY QUIZ] !0 again.

Play with Rhythm! (Rhythm Tutor)
1 Press [SONG] !3, and then press
[RHYTHM TUTOR] !4.
2 Press [START/STOP] !1 to start
Rhythm Tutor.
3 A mark will move across the top of
the display. Press the keyboard
when it reaches the rightmost end.
When the mark reaches here, press the keyboard.
If you play at the correct timing, the letters
“PAS” will be shown.
As long as your timing is right, any key you
play will be correct.
4 When the song ends, the score will
be shown.
Get into the rhythm and do your best to get
a perfect score of 100!
If you want to exit the Rhythm Tutor at any
time, press [START/STOP] !1.
Recording Your Performance
You can record your performance as a User
Song (Song No. 123), which can then be played
back on the instrument.
1 Press [PHRASE REC] y to enter
recording standby.
2 Play the keyboard or press
[START/STOP] !1 to start recording.
3 Press [START/STOP] !1 to stop
recording.
4 To play back the recorded Song,
press [START/STOP] !1.
NOTICE
• Never attempt to turn the power off or to connect
or disconnect the AC adaptor during recording.
Doing so can result in a loss of data.
NOTE
• Only one song can be recorded as the User Song.
When you record a new User Song, the User Song
that was saved before recording is erased and
overwritten.
• To delete the User Song, press [START/STOP]!1 again
after pressing [START/STOP]!1 in Step 2, without
playing any key.
• To play the recorded Song later, press [USER]!4 in
step 2 of “Listening to the Preset Songs”.

Playing Sound from Your Smartphone
or Other Audio Device
1 Turn off the power for both the
audio device and this instrument.
2 Connect the audio device to the
instrument’s [AUX IN] jack.
Use an audio cable having no (zero)
resistance, and is equipped with a stereo-
mini plug on one side for connecting to
the instrument, and an appropriate plug to
match the output jack of the audio device
on the other side.

3 Turn on the audio device, and then
turn on the instrument.
4 Play back the connected audio
device.
The sound of the audio device will be
output through the speakers of the
instrument.
5 Adjust the volume balance between
the audio device and the instrument.
If possible, adjust the playback level of the
audio device first, to achieve the optimum
balance.
6 Stop playback on the audio device.
CAUTION
• Before connecting, turn off the power of both
this instrument and the external audio device.
Also, before turning the power on or off, make
sure to set all volume levels to the minimum (0).
Otherwise, damage to the devices, electrical
shock, or even permanent hearing loss may
occur.
NOTICE
• To avoid possible damage to the external audio
device and this instrument, first turn on the
power to the external audio device, and then
turn on the power to the instrument. Reverse this
order when you turn the power off.

Troubleshooting
Problem Possible Cause and Solution
Not all of the Voices seem to sound, or the
sound seems to be cut off.
The instrument is polyphonic up to a maximum of 32 notes—including auto
accompaniment, Song, and Metronome. Notes exceeding this limit will not sound.
The sound of the Voice changes from note
to note.
This is normal. The AWM tone generation method uses multiple recordings
(samples) of an instrument across the range of the keyboard; thus, the actual
sound of the Voice may be slightly different from note to note.
The power suddenly and unexpectedly turns
off.
This is normal, and the Auto Power Off function may have been activated. If you do
not want to use the Auto Power Off function, disable the Auto Power Off function
(page 11).
When the instrument is turned on, the power
turns off suddenly and unexpectedly.
The protection circuit has been activated due to over current. This may occur when
an AC adaptor other than the one specified is used or the AC adaptor is damaged.
Use the specified adaptor only (see “Specifications”-“Power Supply” below). If it
appears to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it inspected by
qualified Yamaha service personnel.
