PRECAUTIONS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

BEFORE PROCEEDING

Please keep this manual in a safe place for

future reference.

WARNING

Always follow the basic precautions listed below to

avoid the possibility of serious injury or even death

from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire or

other hazards. These precautions include, but are not

limited to, the following:

Power supply/power cord

• Do not place the power cord near heat sources such as

heaters or radiators, and do not excessively bend or

otherwise damage the cord, place heavy objects on it, or

place it in a position where anyone could walk on, trip over,

or roll anything over it.

• Only use the voltage specified as correct for the device. The

required voltage is printed on the name plate of the device.

• Use only the supplied power cord/plug.

If you intend to use the device in an area other than in the

one you purchased, the included power cord may not be

compatible. Please check with your Yamaha dealer.

• Check the electric plug periodically and remove any dirt or

dust which may have accumulated on it.

• When setting up the device, make sure that the AC outlet

you are using is easily accessible. If some trouble or

malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch

and disconnect the plug from the outlet, and also

disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP

DC INPUT] connector. Even when the power switch is

turned off, as long as the power cord is not unplugged from

the wall AC outlet, the device will not be disconnected from

the power source.

• Remove the electric plug from the outlet when the device is

not to be used for extended periods of time, or during

electrical storms.

• Be sure to connect to an appropriate outlet with a protective

grounding connection.

Do not open

• This device contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open

the device or attempt to disassemble the internal parts or

modify them in any way. If it should appear to be

malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it

inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.

Water warning

• Do not expose the device to rain, use it near water or in

damp or wet conditions, or place on it any containers (such

as vases, bottles or glasses) containing liquids which might

spill into any openings. If any liquid such as water seeps

into the device, turn off the power immediately and unplug

the power cord from the AC outlet, and also disconnect the

connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT]

connector. Then have the device inspected by qualified

Yamaha service personnel.

• Never insert or remove an electric plug with wet hands.

Hearing loss

• Before connecting the device to other devices, turn off the

power for all devices. Failing to do so may result in hearing

loss, electric shock, or device damage.

• When turning on the power in your audio system, always

turn on the power amplifier LAST, to avoid hearing loss and

speaker damage. When turning the power off, the power

amplifier should be turned off FIRST for the same reason.

Fire warning

• Do not place any burning items or open flames near the

device, since they may cause a fire.

If you notice any abnormality

• If any of the following problems occur, immediately turn off

the power switch and disconnect the electric plug from the

outlet and also disconnect the connected power supply

from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector.

- The power cord or plug becomes frayed or damaged.

- Unusual smells or smoke are emitted.

- Some object has been dropped into the device.

- There is a sudden loss of sound during use of the device.

- Cracks or other visible damage appear on the device.

Then have the device inspected or repaired by qualified

Yamaha service personnel.

• If this device or the power supply should be dropped or

damaged, immediately turn off the power switch,

disconnect the electric plug from the outlet and also

disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP

DC INPUT] connector, and then have the device inspected

by qualified Yamaha service personnel.

CAUTION

Always follow the basic precautions listed below to

avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others,

or damage to the device or other property. These

precautions include, but are not limited to, the

following:

Power supply/power cord

• When removing the electric plug from the device or an

outlet, always hold the plug itself and not the cord. Pulling

by the cord can damage it.

• To disconnect the device from the mains, unplug both

power cords.

Location

• Do not place the device in an unstable position where it

might accidentally fall over and cause injuries.

• Do not block the vents. This device has ventilation holes at

the sides to prevent the internal temperature from becoming

too high. In particular, do not place the device on its side or

upside down. Inadequate ventilation can result in

overheating, possibly causing damage to the device(s), or

even fire.

• Do not place the device in a location where it may come into

contact with corrosive gases or salt air. Doing so may result

in malfunction.

• Before moving the device, remove all connected cables.

• If the device is mounted in an EIA standard rack, carefully

read the section “Precautions for rack mounting” on

page 13. Inadequate ventilation can result in overheating,

possibly causing damage to the device(s), malfunction, or

even fire.

Maintenance

• Remove the power plug from the AC outlet and also

disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP

DC INPUT] connector when cleaning the device.

Handling caution

• Avoid inserting or dropping foreign objects (paper, plastic,

metal, etc.) into any gaps or openings on the device (vents).

If this happens, immediately turn off the power and then

unplug the power cord from the AC outlet, and have the

device inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel.

• Do not rest your weight on the device or place heavy

objects on it. Avoid applying excessive force to the buttons,

switches or connectors to prevent injuries.

• Avoid pulling the connected cables to prevent injuries or

damage to the device.

Backup battery

• Do not replace the backup battery by yourself. Doing so

may cause an explosion and/or damage to the device(s).

When the backup battery needs to be replaced, the error

icon will appear on the menu bar of the MMP1 Editor while

the MMP1 is connected to the MMP1 Editor. In this case,

contact your Yamaha dealer and have qualified Yamaha

service personnel replace the backup battery.

NOTICE

To avoid the possibility of malfunction/ damage to the product,

damage to data, or damage to other property, follow the

notices below.

Handling and maintenance

• Do not use the device in the vicinity of a TV, radio, AV

equipment, mobile phone, or other electric devices.

Otherwise, the device, TV, or radio may generate noise.

• Do not expose the device to excessive dust or vibration, or

extreme cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight, near a

heater, or in a car during the day), in order to prevent the

possibility of panel disfiguration, unstable operation, or

damage to the internal components.

• Do not place vinyl, plastic or rubber objects on the device,

since this might discolor the panel.

• When cleaning the device, use a dry and soft cloth. Do not

use paint thinners, solvents, cleaning fluids, or chemical-

impregnated wiping cloths.

• Condensation can occur in the device due to rapid, drastic

changes in ambient temperature—when the device is

moved from one location to another, or air conditioning is

turned on or off, for example. Using the device while

condensation is present can cause damage. If there is

reason to believe that condensation might have occurred,

leave the device for several hours without turning on the

power until the condensation has completely dried out.

• The rubber feet included in this package can be attached to

the device to prevent slippage when it is to be used on a

slippery surface.

• Always turn the power off when the device is not in use.

• Even when the both ( ) [MAIN] switch and () [BACKUP]

switch are in standby status (power indicators are off),

electricity is still flowing to the instrument at the minimum

level. When you are not using the instrument for a long time,

make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC

outlet, and also disconnect the connected power supply

from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] jack.

Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused

by improper use or modifications to the device, or data

that is lost or destroyed.

Saving data

This device has a built-in backup battery that maintains data

in internal memory even when the device’s power is switched

off. The backup battery will eventually become depleted,

however, and when that happens the contents of the internal

memory will be lost.* To prevent loss of data be sure to

replace the backup battery before it becomes fully depleted.

When the remaining capacity of the backup battery becomes

so low that it needs to be replaced, the error icon will appear

on the menu bar of MMP1 Editor while the MMP1 is connected

to the MMP1 Editor. If either of these messages appears do

not turn off the power and immediately transfer any data you

want to save to a computer or other external storage device,

then have qualified Yamaha service personnel replace the

backup battery. The average life of the internal backup battery

is approximately five years, depending on operating

conditions.

Thank you for choosing the Yamaha signal processor

MMP1. In order to take full advantage of the MMP1

functionality and enjoy years of trouble-free use, please

read this manual. After you have read the manual, keep it

in a safe place for your future reference.

1-1. Intended user

This product was designed for users who have basic

knowledge and skills related to post-production, audio

recording, or broadcasting.

1-2. Intended usage

• This product was designed to be used to improve the

monitoring and communication environment during

studio recording with a DAW.

• This product was designed to be used to mix multiple

audio sources, and routing audio signals in

broadcasters.

This manual primarily explains operations in setting up this

product for use, such as installation and connection.

1-5. Nomenclature used in this

book

In order to distinguish between the controls on the MMP1

unit and the controls on the screen, control names are

written in the following manner:

• Actual buttons on the unit are called keys, and virtual

buttons on the screen are called buttons.

• Keys, switches, indicators, jacks, etc. located on the

unit are enclosed in [square brackets]. For certain

controls, the name of the section appears before the

brackets (e.g., the SCENE [1] key).

• Menus, buttons, tabs, windows, etc. displayed on the

screen are enclosed in “quotation marks.” (e.g., the

“MUTE” button)

1-6. Applications

To operate MMP1, use the following applications:

• MMP1 Editor (Windows, Mac)

This application allows you to control all functions of the

MMP1.

• MMP1 Controller (iPad)

This application is designed for easy operation of the

MMP1, with a limited set of controllable functions.

Before using the MMP1 Controller, you will need to make

initial settings to your MMP1 using the MMP1 Editor.

For details of these applications, refer to the MMP1

Operation Manual, downloadable from the Yamaha Pro

Audio website:

You can update the unit firmware to improve operation,

add functions, and correct possible malfunctions.

To maintain compatibility between Dante-compatible devices,

2-1. Front panel

SCENE [1] – [5], [RECALL] keys

Used to recall previously stored Scenes in the unit. When

pressing one of the [1] – [5] keys, the key flashes for

about 10 seconds. (If a Scene corresponding to the key is

not stored, the key doesn’t flash.) When pressing the

[RECALL] key while one of the [1] – [5] keys are flashing,

the Scene is recalled, and the key is lit continuously. Use

the MMP1 Editor to store Scenes.

NOTE

You can set the [1] key as the all mute key. For details, refer to the

MMP1 Operation Manual.

SAMPLE RATE indicators

Indicate the current sample rate being used by the unit.

The indicator which synchronizes with the word clock

source lights up. If the unit cannot synchronize with the

word clock source, one of these indicators flashes slowly.

CLOCK indicators

Indicate a word clock source. When the word clock

source is not connected to the unit or the word clock

source has any problems, one of these indicators flashes

slowly.

SYNC indicators

Indicate the sync status between the Dante network and

the unit.

SYSTEM indicators

Indicate the operating status of the unit.

[BACKUP] power switch and indicator

Turns the DC power of the unit to on ( ) or sets it to

standby (). When the DC power unit is turned on, the

indicator lights up.

NOTICE

Even when the power switch is in the standby position (), a

small amount of current is flowing through the unit. When

you are not using the unit for a long time, make sure to

disconnect the power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT]

connector.

NOTE

Setting the unit to on and standby in rapid succession can cause

it to malfunction. After setting the unit to standby, wait for at least

6 seconds before turning it on again.

Green (lit continuously) The unit is working as a clock slave

on the Dante network.

Green (flashing slowly) The unit is working as the clock

master on the Dante network.

Green (off)

Orange (lit continuously)

Synchronization with the Dante

network is in progress.

Orange (flashing slowly) In communication with the secondary

line of a redundant network.

Orange (flashing twice) An error has occurred on the

secondary line of a redundant

network.

Green (lit continuously)

Red (off)

The unit is working properly.

Green (flashing slowly) The firmware is being updated.

Red (lit continuously) An error has occurred in the memory

of the unit. If the issue is still not

solved even when following the

“Restoring factory settings”

instructions on page 15, please

contact your Yamaha dealer.

Red (flashing slowly) An error has occurred in the Dante

module of the unit.

Red (flashing rapidly) The backup battery voltage is

reduced. Please contact your

Yamaha dealer and have qualified

Yamaha service personnel replace

the backup battery.

[MAIN] power switch and indicator

Turns the AC power of the unit to on ( ) or sets it to

standby (). When the AC power unit is turned on, the

indicator lights up.

When both the [MAIN] power switch and [BACKUP]

power switch are on ( ), only AC power is supplied to the

unit.

NOTICE

Even when the power switch is in the standby position (), a

small amount of current is flowing through the unit. When

you are not using the unit for a long time, make sure to

unplug the power cord from the AC outlet.

NOTE

Setting the unit to on and standby in rapid succession can cause

it to malfunction. After setting the unit to standby, wait for at least

6 seconds before turning it on again.

Vent

This unit is equipped with cooling fans. These vents let

warm air out from the unit. Please make sure that you do

not block the vents with any object.

2-2. Rear panel

AC power input socket

For connecting the supplied AC power cord. First,

connect the AC power cord to this unit, and then insert the

power cord plug into an appropriate AC outlet.

Make sure to insert the cord plugs all the way until they

lock in place securely. The supplied AC power cord

features a V-lock mechanism with a latch, which prevents

the power cord from being accidentally disconnected.

CAUTION

Be sure to set to standby

the power of the unit

before connecting or

disconnecting the power cord. To

disconnect the power cord, hold

down the latch on the plug while

removing it.

[BACKUP DC INPUT] connector

For connecting the external DC power unit (+12 V, 45 W)

for backup of AC power supply. The connector type is

XLR-4-32. Refer to “Specifications” for pin assignments.

CAUTION

Before connecting or disconnecting the external

power supply, you must set to standby the power

of this unit and the power of the external power

supply. Malfunctions or electrical shock may occur if you fail

to observe this caution.

NOTICE

When connecting an external DC power supply, please make

sure that it has a sufficient power supply rating. If it has an

insufficient power supply rating, the inrush current when the

unit is turned on may lead to unstable operation or cause a

malfunction. In order to prevent malfunction due to the inrush

current when the unit is turned on, please turn on the unit via

the [MAIN] power switch, rather than the [BACKUP]

power switch.

NOTE

•

AC power is supplied to the unit when both the [MAIN] and

[BACKUP] power switches are turned on.

• When both power supplies are turned on, it automatically

switches to the external DC power supply if a malfunction

causes the AC power supply to be interrupted.

[UNIT ID] rotary switch

Determines the ID that identifies this device on the Dante

network. If there are multiple Dante-compatible devices

from Yamaha that require an ID setting connected to the

same network, set a different ID for each device.

NOTE

The ID setting while the power-on will be applied the next time

you turn the power on.

DIP switches

Used to change settings on the unit. Refer to the sections

“Before connecting” on page 12 and “Restoring factory

settings” on page 15.

NOTE

The setting while the power is on will be applied the next time you

turn the power on.

Vents

Even when the [BACKUP] power switch is in the

standby position, standby current is discharged. For

this reason, Yamaha does not guarantee the use of

batteries.

GPI [INPUT]/[OUTPUT] connectors

For connecting GPI-equipped devices. The connector

type is D-Sub 25-pin female. Use the MMP1 Editor for

detailed GPI settings of the unit. Refer to “Specifications”

for current and voltage of each pin, and for pin

assignments.

Dante [LINK/ACT]/[1G] indicators

Display the communication status of the Dante [PRIMARY]

and the [SECONDARY] connectors.

Dante [PRIMARY]/[SECONDARY] connectors

For connecting to the Dante network. The connector type

is etherCON (RJ-45). A connector can transfer up to 64

channels (in/out) of audio.

NOTE

•

Use an STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cable of CAT5e standard

or better to prevent electromagnetic interference. Make sure

that the metal parts of the plugs are electrically connected to

the STP cable shield by conductive tape or comparable

means.

• For connecting only Dante-compatible devices or GbE-

compatible devices (including a computer).

WORD CLOCK [IN]/[OUT] connectors

For connecting devices to receive or transmit word clock

signals. The connector type is BNC. The WORD CLOCK

[IN] connector is internally terminated by a 75 ohm

resistor.

ANALOG [INPUT 1-8]/[OUTPUT 1-8] connectors

For connecting devices to transmit or receive analog

audio signals. The connector type is 25-pin D-Sub

(balanced). A connector can transfer up to eight channels

(in/out) of audio.

[AES/EBU 1-8]/[AES/EBU 9-16] connectors

For connecting devices to transmit or receive AES/EBU

format digital audio signals. The connector type is 25-pin

D-Sub. A connector can transfer up to eight channels (in/

out) of audio.

NOTE

Use a shielded cable to prevent electromagnetic interference.

Make sure that the metal parts of the plugs are electrically

connected to the cable shield by conductive tape or comparable

means.

LINK/ACT These indicators flash rapidly if the Ethernet

cables are connected properly.

1G These indicators are lit when the Dante

network is functioning as Giga-bit Ethernet.

Determines the ID for identifying each device on the

Dante network. For this setting, use the rotary switch on

the rear panel of the unit. The UNIT ID must be a unique

number in the network.

The unit can be connected to the Dante network in one of

two ways: Star (Redundant) and Daisy Chain. For this

setting, use the DIP switch 1 on the rear panel of the unit.

the rear panel of the unit.

Any settings you change while the power is on will be

retained and applied the next time you turn the power

3-3. Precautions for rack

mounting

This unit is rated for operation at ambient temperatures

ranging from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. If you mount this

unit along with other MMP1 unit(s) or other device(s) in an

EIA standard equipment rack, temperatures inside the

rack may rise, possibly resulting in impaired performance.

When rack mounting the unit, always observe the

following requirements to avoid heat buildup:

• When mounting the unit in a rack with devices such as

power amplifiers that generate a significant amount of

heat, leave 1U space or more between the MMP1 and

other equipment. Also, either leave the open spaces

uncovered or install appropriate ventilating panels to

minimize the possibility of heat buildup.

• To ensure sufficient airflow, leave the rear of the rack

open and position it at least 10 centimeters from walls or

other surfaces.

If the rear of the rack cannot be left open, install a

commercially-available fan or similar ventilating option to

ensure sufficient airflow. If you have installed a fan kit,

there may be cases in which closing the rear of the rack

will produce a greater cooling effect.

Refer to the rack and/or fan unit manual for details.

3-4. Power supply

3-4-1. Connecting the AC power cord

1. Make sure that the [MAIN] power switch

and the [BACKUP] power switch are in the

standby position ( ).

2. Connect the supplied power cord to the AC

power input socket of the unit.

3. Connect the other end of power cord to an AC

outlet.

NOTE

•

To disconnect the power cord,

remove the cable in the order of

steps 1  3  2 in the procedure

described above.

• To disconnect the power cord,

remove it while holding down the

latch on the plug.

WARNING

Use only the supplied AC power cord. Using other

cables may lead to overheating or electric shock.

CAUTION

Be sure to set to standby the power to the unit

before connecting or disconnecting the power

cord.

NOTICE

Even when the power switch is in the standby position (), a

small amount of current is flowing through the unit. If you

plan not to use the unit for a long period of time, be sure to

remove the power cord from the AC outlet.

3-4-2. Turning the power on and set to

standby

When you turn on the power to the unit, be sure to turn on

the power to the power amplifiers and/or powered

speakers last to avoid speaker damage. Before you set to

standby the power of the unit, first turn off the power to the

power amplifiers and/or powered speakers.

3-5. About Dante

Dante is a network audio protocol developed by Audinate.

It is designed to deliver multi-channel audio signals at

various sampling and bit rates, as well as device control

signals over a Giga-bit Ethernet (GbE) network.

3-6. Notes regarding the use

of network switches

Do not use the EEE functionality (*) of network switches on

a Dante network.

Although mutual power consumption settings between

switches that support the EEE functionality are adjusted

automatically, there are some switches for which such

mutual settings are not adjusted correctly.

This may cause EEE to be enabled in Dante networks

when it is not appropriate, resulting in poor

synchronization performance and occasional dropouts.

Therefore we strongly recommend the following.

• If you use managed switches, please disable the EEE

functionality. Do not use switches that prevent EEE

functionality from being disabled.

• When using unmanaged switches, do not use switches

that support EEE functionality. EEE functionality cannot

be disabled for such switches.

* EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet) is a technology that reduces

switch power consumption during periods of low network traffic.

It is also referred to as Green Ethernet and IEEE802.3az.

3-7. Dante network settings

and audio routing

With the Dante network, you can route the audio input and

output of multiple Dante devices in any way you like. This

requires you to set which channel signals are sent to

which inputs.

Use Dante Controller to configure the audio routing of the

Dante network.

4-1. MMP1 Editor

The MMP1 Editor is an application for operating the

MMP1. It is compatible with Windows and Mac.

1. Login with administrative privileges to your

computer to install the MMP1 Editor.

2. Download the MMP1 Editor (installer) from the

Yamaha Pro Audio website:

3. Decompress the downloaded file.

4. Double-click the installer in the

decompressed folder to start installation.

The installer name is “setup.exe” (for Windows),

“Yamaha MMP1 Editor Vx.x.x.pkg” (for Mac). The

characters “x.x.x” indicate the version of the MMP1.

5. Follow the onscreen instructions.

NOTE

•

In Windows, when the “User Account Control” dialog box

appears, click [Continue] or [Yes].

• To uninstall the MMP1 Editor

Windows: In Control Panel, click [Programs and functions] or

[Uninstall a program], then select the MMP1 Editor, and click

[Uninstall or change].

Mac: double-click the “Uninstall Yamaha MMP1 Editor.app,”

and then follow the instructions on screen.

4-2. MMP1 Controller

MMP1 Controller is an application for iPad to operate

MMP1. This application is designed to operate MMP1

intuitively by limiting controllable functions compared to

MMP1 Editor.

1. Search the “MMP1 Controller” at the App

Store.

2. Tap the “MMP1 Controller” to display details.

3. Tap “Free” button.

4. Tap “Install” button.

5-1. MMP1 could not be found

from a computer or iPad

• Make sure that a unique UNIT ID has been set, when

working within the same Dante network.

• Make sure that the network switch is working properly.

The problem may be solved by turning the network

switch off and on again.

• Make sure that the cable is not damaged. The problem

may be solved by replacing the cable.

• Make sure that the IP address of the computer and the

IP address of the unit are set properly.

5-2.No sound

When the device is connected to the Dante network, make

sure that patching within the Dante network is set up

correctly with the Dante Controller.

Follow the steps below to initialize the internal memory of

the unit to the factory programmed settings.

1. Set the unit to standby.

2. Turn on DIP switch 2 (DOWN), and turn the

unit on again.

All front panel indicators (except the power indicator)

flash, indicating all parameters have been restored to

the factory settings.

3. Set the unit to standby.

4. Turn off DIP switch 2 (UP), and turn the unit on

again.

WARNING Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of serious injury or even death from electrical shock, short-circuiting, damages, fire or other hazards. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following: Power supply/power cord • Do not place the power cord near heat sources such as heaters or radiators, and do not excessively bend or otherwise damage the cord, place heavy objects on it, or place it in a position where anyone could walk on, trip over, or roll anything over it. • Only use the voltage specified as correct for the device. The required voltage is printed on the name plate of the device. • Use only the supplied power cord/plug. If you intend to use the device in an area other than in the one you purchased, the included power cord may not be compatible. Please check with your Yamaha dealer. • Check the electric plug periodically and remove any dirt or dust which may have accumulated on it. • When setting up the device, make sure that the AC outlet you are using is easily accessible. If some trouble or malfunction occurs, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the plug from the outlet, and also disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector. Even when the power switch is turned off, as long as the power cord is not unplugged from the wall AC outlet, the device will not be disconnected from the power source. • Remove the electric plug from the outlet when the device is not to be used for extended periods of time, or during electrical storms. • Be sure to connect to an appropriate outlet with a protective grounding connection. Water warning • Do not expose the device to rain, use it near water or in damp or wet conditions, or place on it any containers (such as vases, bottles or glasses) containing liquids which might spill into any openings. If any liquid such as water seeps into the device, turn off the power immediately and unplug the power cord from the AC outlet, and also disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector. Then have the device inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. • Never insert or remove an electric plug with wet hands. Hearing loss • Before connecting the device to other devices, turn off the power for all devices. Failing to do so may result in hearing loss, electric shock, or device damage. • When turning on the power in your audio system, always turn on the power amplifier LAST, to avoid hearing loss and speaker damage. When turning the power off, the power amplifier should be turned off FIRST for the same reason. Fire warning • Do not place any burning items or open flames near the device, since they may cause a fire. If you notice any abnormality • If any of the following problems occur, immediately turn off the power switch and disconnect the electric plug from the outlet and also disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector. - The power cord or plug becomes frayed or damaged. - Unusual smells or smoke are emitted. - Some object has been dropped into the device. - There is a sudden loss of sound during use of the device. - Cracks or other visible damage appear on the device. Then have the device inspected or repaired by qualified Yamaha service personnel. • If this device or the power supply should be dropped or damaged, immediately turn off the power switch, disconnect the electric plug from the outlet and also disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector, and then have the device inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. Do not open • This device contains no user-serviceable parts. Do not open the device or attempt to disassemble the internal parts or modify them in any way. If it should appear to be malfunctioning, discontinue use immediately and have it inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. MMP1 Getting Started 5 PA_en_8 2/2 CAUTION Always follow the basic precautions listed below to avoid the possibility of physical injury to you or others, or damage to the device or other property. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the following: Backup battery • Do not replace the backup battery by yourself. Doing so may cause an explosion and/or damage to the device(s). When the backup battery needs to be replaced, the error icon will appear on the menu bar of the MMP1 Editor while the MMP1 is connected to the MMP1 Editor. In this case, contact your Yamaha dealer and have qualified Yamaha service personnel replace the backup battery. Power supply/power cord • When removing the electric plug from the device or an outlet, always hold the plug itself and not the cord. Pulling by the cord can damage it. Yamaha cannot be held responsible for damage caused by improper use or modifications to the device, or data that is lost or destroyed. • To disconnect the device from the mains, unplug both power cords. Location NOTICE • Do not place the device in an unstable position where it might accidentally fall over and cause injuries. To avoid the possibility of malfunction/ damage to the product, damage to data, or damage to other property, follow the notices below. • Do not block the vents. This device has ventilation holes at the sides to prevent the internal temperature from becoming too high. In particular, do not place the device on its side or upside down. Inadequate ventilation can result in overheating, possibly causing damage to the device(s), or even fire. • Do not place the device in a location where it may come into contact with corrosive gases or salt air. Doing so may result in malfunction. • Before moving the device, remove all connected cables. • If the device is mounted in an EIA standard rack, carefully read the section “Precautions for rack mounting” on page 13. Inadequate ventilation can result in overheating, possibly causing damage to the device(s), malfunction, or even fire. Maintenance • Remove the power plug from the AC outlet and also disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector when cleaning the device. Handling caution • Avoid inserting or dropping foreign objects (paper, plastic, metal, etc.) into any gaps or openings on the device (vents). If this happens, immediately turn off the power and then unplug the power cord from the AC outlet, and have the device inspected by qualified Yamaha service personnel. • Do not rest your weight on the device or place heavy objects on it. Avoid applying excessive force to the buttons, switches or connectors to prevent injuries. • Avoid pulling the connected cables to prevent injuries or damage to the device. 6 MMP1 Getting Started Handling and maintenance • Do not use the device in the vicinity of a TV, radio, AV equipment, mobile phone, or other electric devices. Otherwise, the device, TV, or radio may generate noise. • Do not expose the device to excessive dust or vibration, or extreme cold or heat (such as in direct sunlight, near a heater, or in a car during the day), in order to prevent the possibility of panel disfiguration, unstable operation, or damage to the internal components. • Do not place vinyl, plastic or rubber objects on the device, since this might discolor the panel. • When cleaning the device, use a dry and soft cloth. Do not use paint thinners, solvents, cleaning fluids, or chemicalimpregnated wiping cloths. • Condensation can occur in the device due to rapid, drastic changes in ambient temperature—when the device is moved from one location to another, or air conditioning is turned on or off, for example. Using the device while condensation is present can cause damage. If there is reason to believe that condensation might have occurred, leave the device for several hours without turning on the power until the condensation has completely dried out. • The rubber feet included in this package can be attached to the device to prevent slippage when it is to be used on a slippery surface. • Always turn the power off when the device is not in use. • Even when the both (P) [MAIN] switch and (P) [BACKUP] switch are in standby status (power indicators are off), electricity is still flowing to the instrument at the minimum level. When you are not using the instrument for a long time, make sure you unplug the power cord from the wall AC outlet, and also disconnect the connected power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] jack. Saving data This device has a built-in backup battery that maintains data in internal memory even when the device’s power is switched off. The backup battery will eventually become depleted, however, and when that happens the contents of the internal memory will be lost.* To prevent loss of data be sure to replace the backup battery before it becomes fully depleted. When the remaining capacity of the backup battery becomes so low that it needs to be replaced, the error icon will appear on the menu bar of MMP1 Editor while the MMP1 is connected to the MMP1 Editor. If either of these messages appears do not turn off the power and immediately transfer any data you want to save to a computer or other external storage device, then have qualified Yamaha service personnel replace the backup battery. The average life of the internal backup battery is approximately five years, depending on operating conditions. Welcome Thank you for choosing the Yamaha signal processor MMP1. In order to take full advantage of the MMP1 functionality and enjoy years of trouble-free use, please read this manual. After you have read the manual, keep it in a safe place for your future reference. 1-5. Nomenclature used in this book In order to distinguish between the controls on the MMP1 unit and the controls on the screen, control names are written in the following manner: • Actual buttons on the unit are called keys, and virtual buttons on the screen are called buttons. 1-1. Intended user This product was designed for users who have basic knowledge and skills related to post-production, audio recording, or broadcasting. • Keys, switches, indicators, jacks, etc. located on the unit are enclosed in [square brackets]. Applications To operate MMP1, use the following applications: • MMP1 Editor (Windows, Mac) This application allows you to control all functions of the MMP1. • MMP1 Controller (iPad) This application is designed for easy operation of the MMP1, with a limited set of controllable functions. Before using the MMP1 Controller, you will need to make initial settings to your MMP1 using the MMP1 Editor. Front panel 1 2 3 4 5 6 1 SCENE [1] – [5], [RECALL] keys 5 SYSTEM indicators Used to recall previously stored Scenes in the unit. When pressing one of the [1] – [5] keys, the key flashes for about 10 seconds. (If a Scene corresponding to the key is not stored, the key doesn’t flash.) When pressing the [RECALL] key while one of the [1] – [5] keys are flashing, the Scene is recalled, and the key is lit continuously. Use the MMP1 Editor to store Scenes. Indicate the operating status of the unit. The unit is working properly. Green (flashing slowly) The firmware is being updated. Red (lit continuously) An error has occurred in the memory of the unit. If the issue is still not solved even when following the “Restoring factory settings” instructions on page 15, please contact your Yamaha dealer. Red (flashing slowly) An error has occurred in the Dante module of the unit. Red (flashing rapidly) The backup battery voltage is reduced. Please contact your Yamaha dealer and have qualified Yamaha service personnel replace the backup battery. You can set the [1] key as the all mute key. For details, refer to the MMP1 Operation Manual. Indicate the current sample rate being used by the unit. The indicator which synchronizes with the word clock source lights up. If the unit cannot synchronize with the word clock source, one of these indicators flashes slowly. 3 CLOCK indicators Indicate a word clock source. When the word clock source is not connected to the unit or the word clock source has any problems, one of these indicators flashes slowly. 4 SYNC indicators Indicate the sync status between the Dante network and the unit. Green (lit continuously) The unit is working as a clock slave on the Dante network. Green (flashing slowly) The unit is working as the clock master on the Dante network. Green (off) Orange (lit continuously) Synchronization with the Dante network is in progress. Orange (flashing slowly) In communication with the secondary line of a redundant network. Orange (flashing twice) An error has occurred on the secondary line of a redundant network. 8 Green (lit continuously) Red (off) NOTE 2 SAMPLE RATE indicators 7 6 P[BACKUP] power switch and indicator Turns the DC power of the unit to on (O) or sets it to standby (N). When the DC power unit is turned on, the indicator lights up. NOTICE Even when the power switch is in the standby position (N), a small amount of current is flowing through the unit. When you are not using the unit for a long time, make sure to disconnect the power supply from the [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector. NOTE Setting the unit to on and standby in rapid succession can cause it to malfunction. After setting the unit to standby, wait for at least 6 seconds before turning it on again. MMP1 Getting Started 9 2. Names and Functions 7 P[MAIN] power switch and indicator 8 Vent Turns the AC power of the unit to on (O) or sets it to standby (N). When the AC power unit is turned on, the indicator lights up. When both the P [MAIN] power switch and P [BACKUP] power switch are on (O), only AC power is supplied to the unit. This unit is equipped with cooling fans. These vents let warm air out from the unit. Please make sure that you do not block the vents with any object. NOTICE Even when the power switch is in the standby position (N), a small amount of current is flowing through the unit. When you are not using the unit for a long time, make sure to unplug the power cord from the AC outlet. Vents NOTE Setting the unit to on and standby in rapid succession can cause it to malfunction. After setting the unit to standby, wait for at least 6 seconds before turning it on again. 2-2. First, connect the AC power cord to this unit, and then insert the power cord plug into an appropriate AC outlet. Make sure to insert the cord plugs all the way until they lock in place securely. The supplied AC power cord features a V-lock mechanism with a latch, which prevents the power cord from being accidentally disconnected. When connecting an external DC power supply, please make sure that it has a sufficient power supply rating. If it has an insufficient power supply rating, the inrush current when the unit is turned on may lead to unstable operation or cause a malfunction. In order to prevent malfunction due to the inrush current when the unit is turned on, please turn on the unit via the P [MAIN] power switch, rather than the P [BACKUP] power switch. CAUTION Be sure to set to standby the power of the unit before connecting or disconnecting the power cord. To disconnect the power cord, hold down the latch on the plug while removing it. ) [BACKUP DC INPUT] connector For connecting the external DC power unit (+12 V, 45 W) for backup of AC power supply. The connector type is XLR-4-32. Refer to “Specifications” for pin assignments. NOTE • AC power is supplied to the unit when both the P [MAIN] and P [BACKUP] power switches are turned on. • When both power supplies are turned on, it automatically switches to the external DC power supply if a malfunction causes the AC power supply to be interrupted. ! [UNIT ID] rotary switch Determines the ID that identifies this device on the Dante network. If there are multiple Dante-compatible devices from Yamaha that require an ID setting connected to the same network, set a different ID for each device. NOTE Even when the P [BACKUP] power switch is in the standby position, standby current is discharged. For this reason, Yamaha does not guarantee the use of batteries. CAUTION Before connecting or disconnecting the external power supply, you must set to standby the power of this unit and the power of the external power supply. Malfunctions or electrical shock may occur if you fail to observe this caution. 10 MMP1 Getting Started The ID setting while the power-on will be applied the next time you turn the power on. @ DIP switches Used to change settings on the unit. Refer to the sections “Before connecting” on page 12 and “Restoring factory settings” on page 15. NOTE The setting while the power is on will be applied the next time you turn the power on. 2. Names and Functions # GPI [INPUT]/[OUTPUT] connectors For connecting GPI-equipped devices. The connector type is D-Sub 25-pin female. Use the MMP1 Editor for detailed GPI settings of the unit. Refer to “Specifications” for current and voltage of each pin, and for pin assignments. $ Dante [LINK/ACT]/[1G] indicators Display the communication status of the Dante [PRIMARY] and the [SECONDARY] connectors. LINK/ACT These indicators flash rapidly if the Ethernet cables are connected properly. 1G These indicators are lit when the Dante network is functioning as Giga-bit Ethernet. % Dante [PRIMARY]/[SECONDARY] connectors For connecting to the Dante network. The connector type is etherCON (RJ-45). A connector can transfer up to 64 channels (in/out) of audio. NOTE • Use an STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) cable of CAT5e standard or better to prevent electromagnetic interference. Make sure that the metal parts of the plugs are electrically connected to the STP cable shield by conductive tape or comparable means. • For connecting only Dante-compatible devices or GbEcompatible devices (including a computer). ^ WORD CLOCK [IN]/[OUT] connectors For connecting devices to receive or transmit word clock signals. The connector type is BNC. The WORD CLOCK [IN] connector is internally terminated by a 75 ohm resistor. & ANALOG [INPUT 1-8]/[OUTPUT 1-8] connectors For connecting devices to transmit or receive analog audio signals. The connector type is 25-pin D-Sub (balanced). A connector can transfer up to eight channels (in/out) of audio. * [AES/EBU 1-8]/[AES/EBU 9-16] connectors For connecting devices to transmit or receive AES/EBU format digital audio signals. The connector type is 25-pin D-Sub. A connector can transfer up to eight channels (in/ out) of audio. NOTE Use a shielded cable to prevent electromagnetic interference. Make sure that the metal parts of the plugs are electrically connected to the cable shield by conductive tape or comparable means. MMP1 Getting Started 11 3. Location and Connections 3. Location and Connections 3-2-2. How to connect to the Dante network The unit can be connected to the Dante network in one of two ways: Star (Redundant) and Daisy Chain. For this setting, use the DIP switch 1 on the rear panel of the unit. 3-1. Connection example DAISY CHAIN DIP switch 1 up (default). Talkback REDUNDANT Mic mute switch MMP1 DIP switch 1 down. 3-2-3. IP address Determines the IP address for identifying this unit from a computer. For this setting, use the DIP switch 7 and 8 on the rear panel of the unit. Network switch Auto IP Preamp DAW DIP switch 7 and 8 up. An IP address is automatically set in the range of from 169.254.0.1 to 169.254.254.254 (default). DHCP Computer DIP switch 7 down and 8 up. An IP address is assigned by the DHCP server. Audio signals Control signals Static IP (Auto) 3-2. Before connecting DIP switch 7 up and 8 down. The IP address is set to 192.168.0.xx (xx is the UNIT ID). Make various settings of the unit in advance. 3-2-1. UNIT ID 3-2-2. How to connect to the Dante network Static IP (Manual) 3-2-3. IP address Any settings you change while the power is on will be retained and applied the next time you turn the power on. 3-2-1. UNIT ID Determines the ID for identifying each device on the Dante network. For this setting, use the rotary switch on the rear panel of the unit. The UNIT ID must be a unique number in the network. 12 MMP1 Getting Started DIP switch 7 and 8 down. Set the IP address using the MMP1 Editor. 3. Location and Connections 3-3. Precautions for rack mounting This unit is rated for operation at ambient temperatures ranging from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. If you mount this unit along with other MMP1 unit(s) or other device(s) in an EIA standard equipment rack, temperatures inside the rack may rise, possibly resulting in impaired performance. When rack mounting the unit, always observe the following requirements to avoid heat buildup: • When mounting the unit in a rack with devices such as power amplifiers that generate a significant amount of heat, leave 1U space or more between the MMP1 and other equipment. Also, either leave the open spaces uncovered or install appropriate ventilating panels to minimize the possibility of heat buildup. • To ensure sufficient airflow, leave the rear of the rack open and position it at least 10 centimeters from walls or other surfaces. If the rear of the rack cannot be left open, install a commercially-available fan or similar ventilating option to ensure sufficient airflow. If you have installed a fan kit, there may be cases in which closing the rear of the rack will produce a greater cooling effect. Refer to the rack and/or fan unit manual for details. 3-4. Power supply 3-4-1. Connecting the AC power cord 1. Make sure that the P [MAIN] power switch and the P [BACKUP] power switch are in the standby position (N). 2. Connect the supplied power cord to the AC power input socket of the unit. 3. Connect the other end of power cord to an AC outlet. NOTE • To disconnect the power cord, remove the cable in the order of steps 1  3  2 in the procedure described above. • To disconnect the power cord, remove it while holding down the latch on the plug. WARNING Use only the supplied AC power cord. Using other cables may lead to overheating or electric shock. CAUTION Be sure to set to standby the power to the unit before connecting or disconnecting the power cord. NOTICE Even when the power switch is in the standby position (N), a small amount of current is flowing through the unit. If you plan not to use the unit for a long period of time, be sure to remove the power cord from the AC outlet. 3-4-2. Turning the power on and set to standby When you turn on the power to the unit, be sure to turn on the power to the power amplifiers and/or powered speakers last to avoid speaker damage. Before you set to standby the power of the unit, first turn off the power to the power amplifiers and/or powered speakers. 3-5. About Dante Dante is a network audio protocol developed by Audinate. It is designed to deliver multi-channel audio signals at various sampling and bit rates, as well as device control signals over a Giga-bit Ethernet (GbE) network. Notes regarding the use of network switches Do not use the EEE functionality (*) of network switches on a Dante network. Although mutual power consumption settings between switches that support the EEE functionality are adjusted automatically, there are some switches for which such mutual settings are not adjusted correctly. This may cause EEE to be enabled in Dante networks when it is not appropriate, resulting in poor synchronization performance and occasional dropouts. Therefore we strongly recommend the following. • If you use managed switches, please disable the EEE functionality. Do not use switches that prevent EEE functionality from being disabled. • When using unmanaged switches, do not use switches that support EEE functionality. EEE functionality cannot be disabled for such switches. * EEE (Energy Efficient Ethernet) is a technology that reduces switch power consumption during periods of low network traffic. It is also referred to as Green Ethernet and IEEE802.3az. 3-7. Dante network settings and audio routing With the Dante network, you can route the audio input and output of multiple Dante devices in any way you like.
